Introduction of Anhui
Brief introductionAnhui Province, also known as Wan for short, is located in east of China, onthe lower reaches of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. It borders six provinces,including Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang,Jiangxi, Hubei, and Henan, with theChangjiang and Huaihe Rivers running through. Anhui has an area of 139,000square kilometers, and a population of 66 million. Hefei is the capital.
Geography and Climate
The topography in Anhui Province is high in the southwest and low in thenortheast. Mountains and hills make up two thirds of the total area. Theclimate belongs to semi-humid monsoon of warm temperate and subtropical humidmonsoon. The annual average temperature of the province is 14℃-17℃ and the averagerainfall remains 800-1800mm per year.
Transportation Anhui Province has a convenient transportation. It is only a 45-minute flightfrom Shanghai to Huangshan. Regular flights shuttle between Anhui and majorcities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, dalian, Xi’an, and Hong Kong as well. Railsand Highways link the province with the rest part of the country.
Tourism
Anhui Province has abundant tourist resources with beautiful landscape, manyplaces of historic interest, and rich folk customs. The most famous scenicwonders include Mt.Huangshan, Mt.Jiuhua, Mt.Tianzhu, and Mt.Qiyun, all of whichare national scenic spots. In 1990, UNESCO put Mt.Huangshan on the list of theWorld Cultural and Natural Heritages. In 2000, Xidi & Hongcun was listed inthe World Cultural Heritages as well. Other tourist attractions are the Xin’anRiver, Taiping lake, and the Water Park on Chaohu Lake etc.
Eating
Anhui cuisine is one of the eight great traditions of Chinese cuisine. Anhuicuisine is known for its use of wild herbs, both land and sea, andcomparatively unelaborated methods of preparation.
CultureHuangmeixi, which originated in the environs of Anqing in southwestern Anhui,is a form of traditional Chinese opera popular across China. Huiju, a form oftraditional opera originating in the Huizhou areas of southern Anhui, is one ofthe major precursors of Beijing Opera.
Anhui has a high concentration of traditional products related to calligraphy:Xuanzhou (today Xuancheng) and Huizhou (today Huangshan City) are revered forproducing Xuan Paper and Hui Ink, respectively, which are traditionallyconsidered the best types of paper and ink for Chinese calligraphy.
